“In these economically tight times, growing numbers
of young people are taking a second look at two-year institutions.
They like what they see!” --Joannie M. Schrof,
U.S. News & World Report
More and more students today are choosing to attend community
or technical colleges over senior colleges and universities. In
fact, over five million people attend community/technical colleges
in the United States! That’s more than 44% of all college students
and more than 50% of all first year college students. (U.S.
News and World Report, and Career World Magazine)
Does this trend hold true for our area? You bet! In 1998 and
1999, 53% of all students from Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties
who were enrolled in public institutions of higher education in
South Carolina attended a technical college. And in 1999, 72%
of the first time freshmen from these counties who attended colleges
in South Carolina chose a technical college; 48% of those chose
their local institution, Tri-County Technical College! (data provided
by The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, May, 2000)
