A: She can definitely start out at a 2-year college! Most community colleges, including Tri-County Technical College, offer a University Transfer program in which students can complete the first two years of college work in an environment of small classes and individualized instruction, and then transfer to a 4-year institution to complete their bachelor’s degree. Many students prefer preparing for a career this way. Also, Tri-County Technical College and the Technology and Human Resource Development Department at Clemson University have an articulation agreement in which graduates of career degree programs at Tri-County can transfer into the Customized Training and Development program at Clemson as a junior. (Other transfer opportunities are also available for students in career associate degree programs.)
Also, by attending a community college, students can live at home, focus on studying, and become accustomed to college level work. When they transfer to a 4-year institution, especially if they need to adjust to being away from home, they have already experienced college level work. Remember though, the question is not a matter of “wanting” a 4-year degree. The question is, does your child’s career goal require a 4-year degree. Going to college should never be the goal but a means to achieve a goal.
