A: Today, there are plenty of opportunities in high school for students to take courses related to career goals, and as a parent, you should ensure that your child takes advantage of these opportunities. So be aware of course offerings at your child’s school and meet with your child’s guidance counselor every year during registration to review the courses your child plans to take. Prior to this meeting, review your child’s high school course curriculum guide to find out what courses are offered. Depending on your child’s career goal, your child may need to consider taking courses at her high school’s career center. Discuss this opportunity with her counselor as well. Also, visit the career center to see for yourself what programs are offered, and get a copy of the career center’s curriculum guide. With her career goal in mind, be involved in helping your child plan each year.
